What a day this has been. It started out cool and stayed that way all day. The sun is out bright and now, nearing supper time, there are some white, puffy, clouds in the sky. The kind UFOs like to dart behind about the time you think you saw them.

I was able to go outside and modify one of the older bird feeders and enjoyed being out in my shop immensely. I got my hands dirty and washed them when I came in.

Pepper Jax is working out really well. He is a Jack Russell Terrier we adopted on 14 July 2011 from the Darke County Animal Shelter. He has had his shots and now he goes back on Monday, the 15th, to be neutered. I suppose it will slow him down somewhat but that would be good. He runs like the wind and leaps bushes and shrubs without really trying. He seems to fly through the air and runs like wild horses.

Baked Apple

Baked Apple

What? Your Mother never baked apples? Here’s how Patty does it.

Wash how ever many you wish to fix. I serve a whole apple for each person. First you wash it and then core it. When the core is out I like to put some butter in the opening and then some raisins. Rather than put the brown sugar over the apples, I take a cup of boiling water, dissolve some brown sugar so it is as sweet you like it. I pour this into the baking dish holding the apples and this one cup of liquid is for three apples. I’ve also dissolved about 3/4 Tablespoon of corn starch and added to the liquid so it will thicken as it bakes. I will baste it several times to make sure the good juice gets over the apples. I’ve also learned how to keep the apple peeling from looking so bad after it bakes by making a small cut, not too deep, around the apple. I suppose if you don’t want to mess with a whole apple, you could slice them into a baking dish and pour the butter, raisins and liquid over them and bake the same way. Use a 350° oven and bake for 30 minutes. Stick with fork for tenderness.

I’m sure you can find a recipe on line. I just kind of throw the things together. LOL

Rainy days of my youth

August 11th, 2009 by oldmanlincoln
There is nothing like a rainy afternoon. When rain patters on snow ball bush leaves and kids yell, “I’ll buy it!” those were the best days of my life. Monopoly on a rainy afternoon during World War II when two Harlemans were over there and a flag, with a star, hung in a window over here; Gale and Bobby’s mother, Freda, brought out a dishpan filled with popped corn. Kids loved corn popped in fresh lard; besides, there wasn’t anything else to pop it in. We threw handfuls towards our mouths; some dribbled down wrinkles in shirts and fell on the cement. Finally, when the bottom of the dishpan was silver again, we went home. Game over.

Still Smoking?

I am not proud of this picture. I can blame any faults on the iMac that took it. But the oxygen is real and when I exert myself I have to use it.
